The Shoreham-Wading River High School varsity football team took the field for the first time Saturday since losing one of their own during a routine play.
The team won Saturday against Wyandanch Memorial High School and retired jersey number 54 in honor of teammate Tom Cutinella, who died after a collision on the football field. The score was coincidentally 54-0.
Head coach Matt Millheiser said it was important for the players and the program to move forward and play Saturday's game.
The Wyandanch players presented Cutinella's brother and teammates with roses before the game as a sign of solidarity.
A scholarship fund has been created in Cutinella's name.
