Officials: 2 firefighters, resident injured in fire sparked by Meadowmere Park house explosion
Two firefighters and a resident were injured in a fire sparked by a house explosion in Meadowmere Park, officials say.
Police say the incident happened at around 5:40 a.m. on South Street when a house exploded, causing two other homes to catch fire.
Officials say two firefighters were hurt when part of a chimney collapsed on them.
News 12 is also told that a 63-year-old man inside the home suffered critical burns and was airlifted to the hospital.
The house that exploded has been completely destroyed.
The fire chief says it was especially challenging because the homes in the neighborhood are so close together, and the streets are narrow, which made getting around difficult. He also says the fire spread quickly because of strong winds, which fanned the flames from one house to another.
The fire marshal says that the incident appears to have been a gas explosion, and does not seem suspicious at this time.
