Newsday says 15 of those offenders whose whereabouts are now listed as "unknown" had listed their last known addresses on Long Island. There are warrants out for some of those missing offenders, according to police officials.
The newspaper says that rapists and child molesters are among the missing offenders.
State law requires sex offenders to register annually for inclusion in the Megan's Law database, which tracks the whereabouts of convicted offenders.
A Newsday analysis of state records shows that the missing offenders make up a small percentage of the 36,410 overall sex offenders statewide.
