A Hofstra University graduate has been crowned the new Miss America. 

Miss New York Kira Kazantsev won the nationally televised pageant last night. 

The 22-year-old is a graduate of Hofstra Honors College and now plans to attend law school and become a diplomat. 

Kazantsev's platform during her reign is protecting women against violence, especially in the military.
