Prescription drug abuse is a growing epidemic across the nation and on Long Island. Today, federal agents helped residents safely dispose of unwanted medications so they don't end up in the wrong hands. In an effort to make highly addictive prescription drugs less available, the DEA held a National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, collecting medication at 42 drop-off points around Long Island. "Pharmaceuticals are eclipsing both cocaine and heroin in terms of their addiction rate. And we feel like there's two primary reasons -- it's readily available and and readily accessible," DEA Agent John Austin says. Charles Bernard, another DEA agent, says many teens first gain access to prescription pills right in their own homes. DEA agents say they've pulled 500 tons of prescription drugs nationwide in the past four years, with six of those tons coming from Long Island.
