Police are investigating a crash in Center Moriches that killed a horse that had been running loose.

Police say a tractor-trailer was traveling east on Sunrise Highway near Exit 59 just before 3 a.m. when it hit the animal.

The horse was apparently just standing in the roadway. The driver stayed at the scene; he wasn't hurt.

Police say two additional horses from the Double "D" Bar Ranch in Manorville were also seen near the crash. They have since been found.

It's not clear how they got out.
