The City Council is holding a public hearing on a bill that would require all public schools to install door alarms to prevent students from leaving undetected during the day.
The bill, called Avonte's Law, is named after the 14-year-old boy with autism who slipped out of his Long Island City school in October and was found dead in January.
If the measure passes, alarms would be placed in school buildings housing 600,000 elementary and special education students.
