A boat went up in flames in the Long Island Sound Friday night.

Police say the 40-foot Viking boat was headed from Connecticut to Port Jefferson when it encountered engine trouble and erupted in flames.

It happened about a mile and a half offshore.

The three people on board evacuated onto a dingy and escaped unharmed.

The boat eventually sank.
