The NHL Board of Governors today approved the sale of the Islanders.

The approval came during the league's preseason meeting in New York City.

Commissioner Gary Bettman says the sale could be finalized by the start of the season.

Owner Charles Wang is selling the team to Jonathan Ledecky and Scott Malkin, but will keep majority ownership for two more years.
