Kwanzaa, the holiday that celebrates African-American culture and history, begins today.

The seven-day holiday is marked by lighting a candle each night. Each candle represents the seven principles of the holiday, including unity, creativity and faith.

Kwanzaa was first celebrated in the United States in 1966.
