Officials in Nassau and Suffolk counties reported three probable swine flu cases Wednesday, with two in Nassau and one in Suffolk.
On the heels of Tuesday?s announcement of the first confirmed case of swine flu on Long Island in Nassau County, Gov. David Paterson first announced the probable Suffolk case Wednesday morning. The individual is a 10-year-old female at JFK Intermediate School in Deer Park, according to Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy. Officials say she came down with symptoms over the weekend.
The Nassau County Department of Health says both probable cases are connected to St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens, where dozens of swine flu cases have been confirmed. One is a student at the school, who lives in Rockville Centre. The other is a part-time employee at the school, who lives in Oceanside. Officials say both have mild illness and are home.
The only individual on Long Island with a confirmed case of swine flu lives in Great Neck and is a student at St. Francis. The identity of the student has not been revealed for privacy reasons. The illness was mild and the student has recovered, according to Nassau County Health Commissioner Maria Carney.
New York Health Commissioner Richard F. Daines says it is unknown whether the individual in the probable Suffolk case has any connection to Mexico, but probable cases in Orange and Cortland counties do. Daines says those individuals are doing well and improving.
Gov. David Paterson and Dr. Daines say there will probably be more cases in the state, but urged residents to remain calm. They say there is no cause for alarm and that New Yorkers should know all precautions are being taken. The state is making all resources available to address the swine flu outbreak and has stockpiles of anti-viral medications.
Health officials recommend residents wash hands often, cover their noses and mouths when coughing, avoid contact with sick people and stay home if flu-like symptoms emerge.
