The state health commissioner announced Saturday that two more cases of swine flu were confirmed overnight in Suffolk County, brining the total to four.
However, the cases in Long Beach and Oceanside are still listed as probable by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and health officials are waiting for test results from the CDC.
Despite reports of new cases of the H1N1 flu, some Long Island residents are blaming the media for exaggerating the severity of the outbreak.
"I think that the press has definitely blown it out of proportion," says Jan Darris, of Syosset.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, seasonal flu kills about 20,000 people in the United States every year. So far, swine flu has claimed the life of one baby in Texas.
"That's why I think everyone is making a big deal out of it, and it's not that big of a deal," says Ilyssa Kravit, of Syosset.
In the meantime, President Barack Obama says the United States government is still preparing for the worst-case scenario and working to produce a vaccine against the H1N1 strain. Health officials are concerned that the swine flu may lie dormant over the summer and then resurface next fall.
