An accident during the Battle of the Bay power boat race in the Great South Bay has left two people dead.Police say the 39-foot boat called Aero Express was speeding Sunday afternoon when it flipped over, tossing the men overboard. Coast Guard crews tried to rescue the captain and throttle man, but it was too late.
The victims have been identified as 62-year-old Phillip Dejana, of Bayville, and 48-year-old Kevin Graff, of Port Washington.Witnesses and the team?s onshore crew members speculate the men died as soon as the boat flipped. Race organizers say both men were experienced racers and had all the required safety equipment.
Police say they are still trying to determine what caused the accident.Nearly 50 boats took part in the event.
