A community came together Monday to honor a beloved resident they had lost.
Mickey DeMartis died at age 28 after struggling with serious heart issues throughout his life. He was born with two holes in his heart and a defective pulmonary artery.
DeMartis endured eight open heart surgeries and 55 other cardiac procedures during his lifetime.
The community changed the name of Wyoming Street, which is the street he grew up on, to Mickey's Way. The sign is within eyesight of his family's home.
Mickey's parents say he would have been humbled by all of this attention because he never thought he was doing anything special, just living his life.
They say their pledge as a family is to keep his memory alive. Stony Brook Children's Hospital now has a room named after him and there's an annual senior scholarship at Commack High School.
His mom, Kathy DeMartis says, "He really taught us to live each moment to the fullest. And that's what we did. And that's Mickey's way."
