Wrong-way drivers alarm residents on one-way N. Bellmore street
Residents along a one-way street in North Bellmore say they are tired of wrong-way drivers on their block.
They say drivers routinely speed the wrong way down Hamilton Road near Bellmore Avenue, next to a baseball field.
Susan Cotto, who lives along the roadway, says she sees drivers regularly going the wrong way. She says she is concerned because children are typically playing outside during the summer months.
"I am forever yelling at people," says Cotto.
Residents believe drivers are cutting down Hamilton Road to avoid the traffic light at the intersection of Jerusalem Avenue and Bellmore Avenue. News 12 Long Island's cameras caught one driver who turned around after realizing they were going the wrong way.
Cotto says she's been complaining to the Town of Hempstead for years about her safety concerns. After being contacted by News 12 Long Island, a town spokesperson at first insisted that the proper signage was in place. Later, she told News 12 that "Do Not Enter" signs had apparently been taken down by vandals. Hours later, a town crew showed up to replace them.
The town also says they have told police about the concerns regarding traffic enforcement.
