The city of White Plains is the latest municipality in Westchester to receive migrants from the southern border, according to Mayor Thomas Roach.
Roach tells News 12 that 46 people made up of families and kids under 5 years old from Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Haiti arrived at the Central Motel Courtyard Sunday night.
They're currently occupying 16 rooms, but New York City contracted 29, so more are expected to arrive at some point, but Roach did not know when.
Almost three weeks ago, several buses of migrants arrived at the Ramada Inn in Yonkers, the first in Westchester since New York City began sending its overflow of asylum seekers to the northern suburbs.
Roach said the city will do everything to create a welcoming environment.
"These are people, these are families that are going to be in our city, and we want to make sure they're treated with dignity...fairly, and well," said White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach.
Roach said that while New York City is covering the full cost of housing and care, his administration is looking in what other impacts the influx of people might have. "All of our conversations are working together to mitigate any impact on our other city services but to also ensure that these people are welcomed and treated with care."
Several local nonprofits have told Roach they are prepared and ready to offer any additional services needed.
The mayor says he doesn't know how long the migrants will be staying here and that he is scheduled to meet today with several nonprofit organizations who are ready to help.
