A costume designer in Brooklyn has been teaching students proper fashion design techniques for 27 years.
Allison Galker started teaching students how to create patterns and sew complete outfit as an extracurricular activity.
She says there became a lot of demand for the skill so she turned it into a class.
Students at the Edward R. Murrow High School take the class as an elective, but they say it's much more.
“When you see your classmates wearing your design while they perform on stage, it feels like you are a part of making that,” Makenna Prince, a 12th-grader, says.
Galker says the students work on multiple projects and prepare costumes for four school shows a year.
She says it's rewarding to see her students finish their projects.
"It's pretty amazing. You start by just drawing it out, and it's this flat thing and then you learn how to use the sewing machine. Before you know it, you have this item in your hands that you made," Galker says.
Ticket sales from the schools performances help to fund the supplies for all of the costumes.
