West Islip girl scores literary home run

WEST ISLIP - A West Islip student recently won a writing contest and scored an afternoon with a local sports star.

Amanda Dewey, a fourth-grader at Paul J. Bellew Elementary School, took home first prize in the "TD Bank Take a Duck to Class" essay contest. Her reward included a visit from Ducks player Ray Navarrete, who spoke to students about studying hard and eating healthy. 

In the essay, Amanda wrote about her childhood in West Islip, as well as the town's history. 

Amanda also received a Visa Gift Card and a visit from Quacker Jack, the team's mascot.
