NCAA Tournament, Powerball make for a big weekend to win
It's a great weekend for people who like to take risks on hitting it big.
There's a $625 million Powerball Jackpot, and there's also plenty of people trying their luck with NCAA basketball tournament brackets.
Glen's Variety Plus in Norwalk was busy today with people getting lottery tickets, while others kept a close eye on the games.
Legalizing sports betting in Connecticut has been a hot topic in the state Legislature, and many stores like Glen's are all for it.
"It's going to get revenue otherwise everybody's going to go out of state," says Glen Dudas, of Glen's Variety Plus. "They're going to go to Jersey, New York, whoever else is doing it and they're doing it in Jersey now and they say it's off the wall."
State Sen. Dennis Bradley has been leading the charge on legalizing sports betting in Connecticut. He says it is a great way to add funds to the state's bottom line.
"Issue those licenses, have private businesses pay into those licensing fees and then tax a certain percentage of what they make," says Bradley.
Bradley says sports betting is not gambling, and he doesn't think that would violate the Indian tribal contract the state has with Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods.
A bill authorizing sports wagering and internet gambling has advanced to the state Senate and House floor.
