Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Wednesday that the group with the highest percentage of COVID-19 related deaths in New York City is the Hispanic community.

In preliminary data, the mayor said 34% of COVID-19 related deaths are Hispanics, followed by 28% black, 27% white and 7% Asian.

He said factors could possibly include health care, income and living in multi-generation households.

Mayor de Blasio also took time to thank New Yorkers for their efforts during the coronavirus pandemic.

He thanked “everyday New Yorkers” for social distancing and helping one another in this unprecedented time.

“I have always felt in my heart New Yorkers would rise to the occasions and you have,” said Mayor de Blasio.

He said it is more important than ever to continue using precautions and social distancing guidelines.

Mayor de Blasio also said that equipment is still needed in hospitals around the city. He said there are currently 5,500 ventilators in hospitals across the city.

As the need for PPE continues, the mayor has requested 9 million surgical gowns from the government in order to get through April and May.

It was also announced that the Tunnel 2 Towers foundation pledged $3 million for health care workers, as well as Sen. Chuck Schumer unveiling the COVID-19 Heroes Fund that will work to give essential workers extra pay.
