Vigil held for Hempstead girl fatally struck by bullet
A vigil was held Sunday for the 12-year-old Hempstead girl who died after being struck in the brain by a stray bullet Friday evening,
Police say Dejah Joyner was standing in the living room of her house at 204 Dartmouth St. at around 5 p.m. when a single bullet pierced through the front bay window and struck her.
The seventh-grader in Hempstead School District was brought to the hospital in critical condition.
Hempstead lawmakers, clergy and residents held a rally outside Joyner's home Sunday afternoon. People also prayed for the 12-year old's family during a community rally. In the evening, a vigil was held at the Union Baptist Church.
Turner's family sat in the front row of the church as the entire congregation shared their pain. Her father clutched one of her favorite stuffed animals, and her mother buried her face in his shoulder as pastors from several area churches prayed for the family.
The congregation also prayed for the perpetrator. They asked God to compel that person to step forward.
Another vigil is scheduled for Tuesday night, and organizers say they will continue to apply the pressure, and continue to talk about the incident until somebody steps up and tells authorities who fired the gun.
Hempstead Village and Nassau County Crime Stoppers are offering a $75,000 reward for tips that lead to an arrest and conviction in the case. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
