The principal at Mount Vernon High School says the students are under control following videos that surfaced of students seemingly out of control and fighting in and out of the school.
The videos were posted less than a week after a riot ensued following a visit from a famous rapper.
"We don't have fights every day at Mount Vernon High School," says principal Ronald Gonzalez
The videos appear to show a few different altercations involving students recently, which has led the Mount Vernon school district to take action.
It is taking legal action against Mayor Richard Thomas for bringing rapper Fat Boy SSE to the school unannounced last Friday during midterms. The school board is asking the city to pay for the damage left behind at the school following the visit.
"It was not normal for those students for our students to have their exams interrupted and so they're responding in an atypical way. It wasn't a typical day at Mount Vernon High School," says Gonzalez.
There is no proof that the brawl videos were related to that visit, but Gonzalez can say all of this can be due to disruption.
"When those routines are broken, students can sometimes revert back to either behaviors they practiced in the past or revert to behaviors that may not be normal for them," he says.
The principal says there are more than 1,600 students in the high school, and says policing them and getting them back on track takes some time.
He says he feels they are back on track and hopes that the students who posted the videos of the fights on social media take them down.
