Victims ravaged by Superstorm Sandy pay back to North Carolina
Volunteers from across the U.S. helped rebuild neighborhoods, including groups from North Carolina, when Superstorm Sandy made landfall in New Jersey six years ago.
Victims in the hard-hit areas at the Jersey Shore say it's time to pay it back.
In Ortley Beach, this neighborhood was basically leveled, and rebuilt from the ground up.
Homes were swept out to sea and into the bay, and residents say they haven't forgotten about the people who helped make it possible to come back from unthinkable destruction.
Cynthia Shanker wakes up every morning with a view overlooking the Barnegat Bay, the same bay which claimed so many homes on Pelican Island, between the mainland and Seaside Heights during Sandy.
Shanker remembers being unable to return for months, and the years it took to rebuild, in part thanks to volunteers from North Carolina who stayed for years.
“We needed every single person that came and helped us,” says Shanker. “We needed them all and these people that came from down south were just selfless. I can't imagine how they were able to stay here for that long and do what they did for years it went on."
Cynthia helped organize a donation drive.
Just about everyone from Pelican Island contributed food, cleaning supplies, gift cards, and money to be shipped back to the North Carolina.
The local relief efforts were started by a group called Sandy Weekday Warriors.
They are still accepting donations.
