Memorial Day parades across Long Island Monday honored those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the United States.
Veterans say that Memorial Day parades, while not celebrations exactly, are a way for people to publicly express their appreciation for those who have served.
Andrew X. Brady, a veteran and member of American Legion Post 360, helped lead off Huntington's parade. The day is about “remembrance," he says, “for past veterans who passed away and ones who are going through difficult times now."
For some parade spectators, attending Memorial Day events is also about making sure the next generation understands how important it is to honor veterans.
