Union County College set to offer marijuana classes
Another New Jersey college will be offering classes about marijuana as state lawmakers continue to debate over legislation to legalize adult recreational use.
Union County College will begin a cannabis curriculum this upcoming fall.
“So it's a good program to have if it eventually does become popular,” says student Raquel Costa. “It's going to be good for students to learn more about it."
The classes will be about the science and business of marijuana, with a focus on preparing students for industry jobs.
UCC partnered with the New Jersey Cannabusiness Association to create the program. The association predicts a windfall of jobs in New Jersey if recreational marijuana use is made legal.
“What still has yet to be determined is how many different licenses will be offered,” says the association’s Scott Rudder. “We expect it to be something way north of 30,000 direct jobs."
But since marijuana is still an illegal substance in New Jersey, college educators have had to get creative. Students may use virtual reality to stand in for actual marijuana plants.
"If you're going to have it and they are going to be there, you might as well know what you're doing rather than going in blind and have everything go terrible,” says student Jordan Darby.
William Paterson University and Stockton University also offer classes about marijuana.
