A triathlon was held Sunday to honor Chase Kowalski and the other victims of the Sandy Hook shooting.
The Race For Chase Triathlon took place at Wolfe Park. Nearly 200 kids ran, swam and biked in the event, keeping the memory of their former friends and peers alive.
The triathlon is part of a larger six-week training program created by the CMAK foundation to teach children how to bike and swim and compete in regular triathlons like Chase.
“That foundation was established to help family values, do things that Chase liked to do. Celebrate his life,” said Kevin Grimes, the executive director of the CMAK foundation, which stands for Chase Michael Anthony Kowalski.
“To honor his spirit, we created a foundation, because he, at 6 years old, was a winning triathlete,” Rebecca Kowalski, Chase’s mother, said.
Chase had always loved to run and swim, and one night he asked his mom to compete in a triathlon. They googled one, and the next week, he was participating in one.
