A Queens courtroom heard opening statements Friday in the trial of a man accused of killing 25-year-old NYPD Detective Brian Moore, of Massapequa. 

Demetrius Blackwell, of Queens, was charged with shooting Moore in the head in May 2015. The officer died two days later. 

Prosecutors said in court that Moore and his partner were on a routine patrol in Queens when Moore spotted Blackwell in the street adjusting his waistband and fidgeting in his pocket. They said Moore asked Blackwell, "You got something?" 

At that point, Blackwell allegedly opened fire, striking Moore twice in the face.

Prosecutors say their case will include eyewitnesses and DNA evidence. Blackwell's defense attorney suggested that his client's mental health will be a big part of their case. 

The Kew Gardens courthouse was packed during the opening statements with family members and fellow members of the NYPD. Outside the courthouse, PBA president Pat Lynch called the mental illness defense "an insult." 

Testimony in the case is expected to begin on Monday. If convicted on the top count of first-degree murder, Blackwell would face life in prison without the possibility of parole.
