Stamford drivers are in for a smoother commute as the traffic light systems across the city are gradually being improved, updated and synchronized.

This is the first time since 1991 that the traffic systems have been updated in Stamford to reflect the congestion in the city.

By the end of the summer, thanks to new fiber optics and hard drives, all of the city's lights will be in sync with cars, pedestrians, bikers in designated areas, and most importantly, with each other.

"Correctly timed lights improves their experience," says Traffic, Transportation and Parking Bureau Chief Jim Travers. "As a pedestrian, you're going to feel much safer on the streets. As a driver, you're going to reduce your frustration, you're going to get from point A to point B in a more efficient manner."

Travers says drivers could see commutes cut down by minutes. Improvements already made on Summer Street between Bridge and Spring streets show a 33% reduction in travel time.

Officials say with these improvements, comes more crossing time for pedestrians and bikers where bike lanes are available.
