Town of Hempstead 'Safe Surrender' event helps re-entry

People with outstanding warrants or tickets could come forward without fear of being arrested. (February 23, 2013)

HEMPSTEAD - The Village of Hempstead held a safe surrender event today, allowing people with outstanding warrants to come forward without the worry of being arrested.

Residents could also have those warrants vacated and tickets resolved.

"It helps the community because it's a form of re-entry,” says Hempstead Village Court Judge Tanya Hobson-Williams. “It gives individuals an opportunity to re-enter society and become a productive member of society. And it also limits their contact with law enforcement."

The village is holding another event next Saturday.
