Thousands pay tribute to slain NYPD officer
More than 10,000 people, many of them police officers from around the country, paid their respects to a slain police officer this morning in Babylon. Chopper 12 was over the funeral for fallen officer Peter Figoski at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church.Police Commissioner Ray Kelly posthumously promoted Figoski to the rank of detective during the funeral. The sea of blue uniforms stood in formation on North Carll Avenue to say goodbye to Figoski. His flag-draped casket was carried into the church while the sound of bagpipes floated over the crisp winter air.The decorated 22-year veteran was killed in the line of duty when he responded to a robbery in the Cypress Hills section of Brooklyn last week. Figoski was shot by alleged gunman Lamont Pride, who was part of a crew that was plotting to rob a drug dealer, police say. The five men have all been charged in his murder and are being held without bail. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was among the thousands who bid their final farewells to the single father of four daughters. Figoski was remembered by his fellow officers in the 75th Precinct as a cool-headed cop with an easy smile and a quiet demeanor.
Babylon Junior Senior High school was closed today for the service, but classes will resume tomorrow. To watch Chopper 12 footage from the funeral, go to channel 612 on your iO digital cable box and select the 'iO Extra' tab.
