Residents in Hunts Point gathered Thursday to remember two young sisters who died as the result of a radiator malfunction one year ago.
Scylee Vayoh and Ibanez Ambrose, 1 and 2 years old, were rushed to Lincoln Hospital from the homeless shelter at 720 Hunts Point Ave. with burns on their faces and bodies, officials say.
News 12 reported reported that that a valve on the radiator malfunctioned, allowing steam to spew out and burn the girls. The city Department of Buildings had issued the shelter a gas connection violation before the incident occurred. The shelter also has had more than two dozen other violations issued.
Tenants of the building say they started an association this past summer to fight those problems. They say elevators and heat are issues that still remain.
Neighbors, who brought candles and balloons for the vigil, say a lack of action from the city and the building’s landlord is disrespecting the memory of the two girls. A call to the landlord’s office led to a busy phone line.
The parents of the victims have temporarily relocated to Maine, but say they visit the neighborhood often.
