A University Heights home is being prepared as a transitional facility for more than 20 kids coming from the U.S.-Mexico border.
Ischia Bravo, district manager of Community Board 7, received an email from Catholic Guardian Services June 12 saying their new residential program, funded by the federal government, will be housing 24 kids who are of "unaccompanied alien children" status.
Bravo says she had many questions about their education, health services and much more. She says those questions were answered immediately by CGS. She says they were told 23 boys will be supervised 24/7 for 45 to 60 days.
The Department of Education will provide a teacher for them, they'll be taken to see a physician within 24 hours of arrival for a physical and mental health evaluation. There will also be recreational activities like going to the Bronx Zoo.
The community board also offered its services in terms of providing clothing, toiletries, books and more.
After the kids' stay in the facility, they'll be placed with either friends or family after their addresses have been vetted. But at that point, CGS told Bravo the grant they received does not allow them to follow up with the kids, and when they turn 18, their information is turned over to ICE.
While the community board was contacted about this facility being opened, some local elected officials say they weren't given a heads up. The board says it is now working to contact elected officials to see what can be done for the kids after they turn 18.
The house is still vacant because there's still work to be done to make sure the rooms and space is ready. News 12 is told the boys should arrive within the next two months.
