Teaneck officials say that the town’s new emergency alert system is working as it should be.

The town tested the new system Wednesday. The original alert system had speakers up on six poles around the town. They have now added an additional four.

New buildings such as hotels and high rises in Teaneck will also be required to connect through a system so the alerts can be heard.

In the case of emergencies like hurricanes or train derailments, evacuation orders will be given. Live broadcasts will also be possible.

"The impetus for this project is Superstorm Sandy,” says Teaneck Township Manager Dean Kazinci, “We had difficulties getting through to the public. Power outages, our senior community, people that don't have connection to the internet, that don't have smartphones. So we found this was a way to get to them."

Kazinci also said there's a significant Orthodox Jewish community who don’t use electronics during Sabbath, so the alert system would reach them too.
