Sweden to celebrate Jonas Bronck, first European settler in the Bronx
The 375th anniversary of the first European to settle in the Bronx will be celebrated this weekend nearly 4,000 miles away.
The borough's namesake, Jonas Bronck, arrived from Sweden hundreds of years ago, and now both countries will come together in his honor.
There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at a newly-minted Jonas Bronck building, which will serve as a Swedish tourism, historical, cultural and genealogy center there.
Familiar faces will be in Sweden to represent the borough, including President of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce Lenny Caro, who will deliver an official proclamation and a Bronx flag.
