Suspect in NYPD shooting charged with murder
A suspect has been arrested and charged in the fatal shooting of an NYPD officer Tuesday night in the East Harlem section of Manhattan.
Authorities say 33-year-old Officer Randolph Holder and his partner responded to a call of shots fired at around 8:30 p.m. A man had reportedly run away after stealing a bicycle at gunpoint.
They say Holder and another officer confronted the armed man at East 120th Street and FDR Drive, where there was a gunfight and chase. Holder was shot in the head and was pronounced dead nearly two hours later.
The shooter ran off, but was caught a few blocks away with a gunshot wound to the leg. The suspect is 30-year-old Tyrone Howard, of Harlem. He has been charged with murder in the shooting.
Authorities say Howard has been in and out of jail and was wanted for a separate shooting last month. He was also arrested last year for allegedly selling crack.
Officials say the bicycle and at least one gun were recovered, and shell casings from possibly three weapons were discovered at the scene.
NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton and Mayor Bill de Blasio say the entire force is in mourning.
"Four police officers murdered in 11 months. That's about as bad as it gets," says Bratton.
Holder, who joined the force in 2010, worked in the NYPD division that polices the city's public housing developments. He lived in Brooklyn, but was a native of Guyana, where his father and grandfather were both police officers.
