A new survey from a group called Safe Kids Worldwide found 86 percent of parents are making the switch from booster seats to seat belts much too early.
For years, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recommended that children ride in car seats or booster seats until they are 57 inches tall and weigh between 80 and 100 pounds.
Safety experts say moving a child into a seat belt too soon could cause serious internal injuries or even death during a crash.
State police are holding their monthly child seat inspection for parents this Saturday at 7140 Republic Airport in Farmingdale.
The inspection is free, but an appointment is necessary.
