Students at SUNY Old Westbury say moldy dorm rooms are making them physically sick one year after making complaints about it.
The students say there is mold in more than a dozen dorm rooms. Student Government President Kalief Metellus organized a march across campus Tuesday in response.
"They've been sick, they've been hospitalized, personal stuff has been damaged," said Metellus.
Students say three buildings in the Woodlands Residence Halls are contaminated with mold and they say the problem hasn't improved since last year.
In a statement, a spokesperson for SUNY Old Westbury said, "The college invested heavily this summer to reduce the likelihood of mold occurring, including purchasing and installing 15 commercial dehumidifiers -- one for every floor of each building."
The university says every room has been cleaned and air filters have been replaced, but students say the mold keeps coming back.
"I'm paying $6,000. I should at least have somewhere clean to live," said Daniel Warren.
The president of the college addressed the mold concern at the start of the school year. He said there's no easy fix for something that naturally occurs, but the school will do its best to control the temperature and conditions inside of the rooms and halls.
