Suffolk police say a Ronkonkoma man who was pulled unresponsive from a beach at Smith Point County Park in Shirley died Sunday afternoon.

Investigators say a Suffolk County park ranger was notified that a swimmer on Outer Beach was in distress around noon.

Police say the ranger and a good Samaritan found the swimmer and tried to toss him a life ring but Suffolk police lifeguards on Jet Skis found the man identified as 70-year-old Vincent Nespoli unresponsive.

He was pulled from the water and taken to shore where CPR was performed on him.

Nespoli was taken to Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives ask anyone with information on the incident to call the Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392.
