Suffolk County police have launched a new system that allows people to text 911 in case of an emergency.

Police say the text will go straight to the same emergency complaint operators who field 911 calls. The texts will be handled in a similar matter.

Officials say the system would be especially beneficial to those dealing with a domestic violence situation, burglary in process or to those whose disabilities preventing them from speaking.

Police say there are some guidelines if you're going to text 911. You can only send in text format, meaning no pictures, videos or group chats. And police say it's imperative to use plain, simple language.

Nassau County police say you will also be able to text 911 there shortly. But there's no word yet on exactly when that will go into effect.
