Suffolk police say they issued dozens of summonses at a motorcycle safety checkpoint on the Long Island Expressway Sunday.
The checkpoint was set up in the eastbound lanes between exits 65 and 66 in Yaphank.
In less than 2 1/2 hours, police say a total of 134 motorcycles passed through the checkpoint, and 57 summonses were issued. One man was also arrested.
The alleged infractions that were encountered included eight unlicensed operators, 17 uninspected motorcycles, four uninsured motorcycles, one unregistered motorcycle, 13 modified or loud exhaust systems, one license plate improperly displayed, six unapproved helmets, four instances of driving between marked lanes, and one instance of disobeying signs, according to police.
In addition, police say 43-year-old Robert Russo, of North Babylon, was arrested for aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He was also issued summonses for making an improper U-turn and walking on a highway after he allegedly tried to avoid the checkpoint. Police say Russo's license had previously been suspended 17 times.
