Suffolk officer accused of sexually abusing woman in custody
A Suffolk County police officer is accused of sexually abusing a woman in his custody in March.
Officer Christopher McCoy was arraigned Thursday in federal court on civil rights violations.
A five-page federal indictment unsealed Thursday morning describes in graphic details the alleged victim's account of how McCoy allegedly forced her to twice perform oral sex on him while she was in custody at the 1st Precinct in West Babylon. She had been arrested on outstanding vehicle and traffic warrants.
"It would be inappropriate for us to comment now regarding the reliability of the complaint or the $40 million lawsuit that has been filed so quickly," says William Petrillo, McCoy's attorney.
According to William Sweeney Jr., the assistant director in charge of the FBI's New York office, "Police officers are held to a high standard, as they should be, and they certainly don't have the authority to disrespect any human being."
McCoy has been suspended without pay from the Suffolk Police Department since April. His family was in court Thursday but did not speak with reporters. The Suffolk police commissioner, however, did.
"We are not going to tolerate this," says Suffolk Police Commissioner Tim Sini."Obviously we'll be seeking termination."
As a result of the alleged incident, Sini announced that cameras have been installed in the interview rooms at the 1st Precinct and are also being installed at every other county precinct.
McCoy was released on $500,000 bail.
The FBI is asking any other potential victims to come forward.
