Suffolk family shocked by movers' shoddy job
A couple who hired a Suffolk moving company to haul their belongings to their new home was shocked to find items big and small had been crushed, dented and ruined.
Jennifer and Peter Moffat just bought their first home in Holbrook, where they will raise their two young children. They hired Hauppauge-based Bay Shore Moving and Storage to bring all of their property from their former apartment in Queens. But when they got to their new home and began unpacking, the couple was dismayed to see many of their items had been damaged or ruined.
"I think this is the worst experience of my life," Jennifer Moffat says. "Every time I open a box I feel like I'm going to cry, because something else is broken."
Cracked lamps, crushed dishes, scuffed furniture and ripped baby mattresses are among the damaged items. The say their 4-year-old daughter's bed is buckled and now unusable. But the worst damage was sustained by their refrigerator: one of its doors has completely fallen off its hinges.
Moffat says she called her sales representative multiple times, but has not yet heard back. News 12 attempted to contact the company by phone, but did not receive a response. A News 12 reporter visited the Hauppauge location on Sunday, but no one was there.
The couple did receive an email from the company that included a claim form. The email said to submit receipts for everything that was damaged, but the Moffats say they don't have receipts for everything. The email also instructs them not to repair anything yet, but it does not say if or when the Moffats can expect to receive a refund.
Moffat says she's not asking for much, just for the situation to be made right. "I want my refrigerator replaced, and I would really like a refund," she says.
