Students stage 'die-in' protest
In an act of symbolism, students lay silent as they staged a "die-in" before marching in Bedford Park over the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown.
The students lay outside on the steps of Bronx Science High School for five minutes Friday. They then read the names of people who died while in contact with police.
Later, dozens of students from Bronx Science High School and High School of American Studies marched from the die-in to Van Cortlandt Park.
"It's really unsettling because everyone should be able to walk freely and think that they're safe," said student Shabana Bachu.
Students said their mission is simple: to draw attention to what they believe is unjust treatment by police.
