An emailed “threat to cause harm” prompted a lockdown Tuesday morning at two Lakewood schools, school district officials told News 12 New Jersey.

Lakewood middle and high schools went into lockdown around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday after the Lakewood Police Department received the alleged threat, district officials said.

According to Lakewood Board of Education attorney Michael Inzelbuch, a male student sent the message from his classroom to the police.

The attorney said two 17-year-old students were removed from the school.

Lakewood police said it was determined that the email was sent as a hoax.

"One of the students sent our website the email, but used the other student's identifiers. Both students were attending a business law class at the time the message was sent from a school computer. It was later determined that the student whose identifiers were used did not play a role in the hoax," Lakewood police Lt. Gregory Staffordsmith said.

The lieutenant said the student who allegedly sent the email was charged with creating a false public alarm and terroristic threats. He was released pending a juvenile hearing. 

Inzelbuch said the lockdown was lifted around noon, and that classes resumed as scheduled.

School district officials said parents were notified via phone within 15 minutes of the incident. No one was injured.
