Strike on the horizon if deal isn't made between Co-op City managers, maintenance workers
Co-op City has a possible strike on its hands as its maintenance workers' contract is close to expiring.
The "city within a city" has 50,000 residents and 35 high-rise buildings. If the union workers don't come to an agreement with RiverBay, the company that manages Co-op City buildings, the maintenance of the buildings may be in jeopardy.
The workers don't want to strike, but they say there's no way they will be able to keep working if they don't get a raise.
The 32BJ union members took a unanimous vote Thursday to authorize a strike if the union can't make an appropriate agreement.
A union representative told News 12 that this kind of thing happens every contract cycle. It hopes to make a deal with management before a strike is imposed.
The current contract is set to expire on June 8.
RiverBay has yet to respond to News 12 in regard to the upcoming negotiations.
