This week was supposed to mark the first day back in the halls for Southold students and staff - but two positive tests from staff members have put that on hold.

Administrators say they were notified by the employees Sunday about their positive tests. The two affected staffers say they are feeling better already.

Students will now log on from home to start the 2020-21 school year.

Students in Southold will return for in-person learning on Sept 18.

Riverhead schools are also set to make changes after administrators say two siblings from Aquebogue Elementary School tested positive for COVID-19.

School leaders say some teachers and students will have to quarantine for 14 days, effective immediately, and learning will continue remotely.

Their interim superintendent says they have temporarily closed off all areas of the building that the students used while in school, so those spaces can be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

In Carle Place, in-person learning was supposed to start Wednesday, but now everyone will be logging on from home for distance learning until further notice.

The superintendent sent a letter to families saying new positive coronavirus cases appear to be related to end-of-summer high school parties.
