A staff member at New Hyde Park Memorial High School has tested positive for COVID-19, officials say.

The Sewanhaka Central High School District posted the news on its website. It says the individual will not be allowed back at school for at least 10 days, and that they must first test negative for the virus.

Officials say the staff member attended the superintendent's conference day activities on Sept. 2.

In a statement, superintendent Dr. James Grossane says the health and safety are a top priority to the district and, "the building, especially the rooms, the staff member attended meetings in will all be cleaned and disinfected. The Department of Health has advised us that after that cleaning the building is safe to open."

The district says nine other staff members are now being required to quarantine for 14 days. It says says the school will still be open on Thursday for the first day of classes for students.

In the Riverhead school district, two siblings who attended Aquebogue Elementary School have tested positive for COVID-19.

The school says teachers and students in their classes are being advised to quarantine for two weeks while the classrooms are being cleaned.
