State officials have released new guidelines for high school sports amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The state High School Athletic Association says that as some high school sports can resume on Long Island on Sept. 21, there can be no pre- or post-game handshakes, hugging, high fives or fist bumps. Coaches are encouraged to limit game-day team and roster sizes for social distancing purposes.
High-risk sports like cheerleading, football and volleyball may practice but not play in games.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo previously announced that low-risk sports like soccer, swimming, field hockey, cross country and tennis may resume practice. One of the guidelines states that soccer players have to wear a mask while playing unless they're not able to tolerate it.
