Suffolk County police shot a man and his dog while trying to make an arrest in Brentwood Friday, officials say.

The incident happened on Claywood Drive at around 5:30 p.m.

Officials say they were arresting the man for violating an order of protection when his dog charged at an officer.

The officer fired his gun at the dog and killed it. The owner's hand was shot, as well.

The owner was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say they are investigating the incident.
