Two shark sightings closed the beaches along Nassau's South Shore Monday.
The first was at Lido Beach. A lifeguard patrolling in the water spotted the shark around 10:15 a.m.
"It came out, shot out of the water, spun around and it didn't look like a dolphin, it was definitely a shark," said lifeguard Logan Fitzgerald.
The second sighting was in Long Beach early Monday afternoon. The water, all the way from Atlantic Beach to Jones Beach, was shut down to swimmers.
Officials believe the shark in Lido was a bull shark, approximately 7 to 10-feet long and about 8 to 10-feet from the shoreline.
It was a confusing day for some beachgoers, who were called out of the water a few different times. Christine Abrams and her family were at the beach, including her youngest son, who just started liking the beach because he had been worried about sharks.
"We've been telling him there are no sharks ever in the water, so that made us a little nervous," says Abrams. "We're not telling him what happened today because he'd never go in again."
Lifeguards had been on high alert after a ray with "sizable" chunks bitten off was discovered earlier in the week.
Shortly before 5 p.m., people were allowed back into the water at all Hempstead beaches, but only at knee-deep depth.
